What Keeps You Writing?
There are days when words flow like an unstoppable river, effortless and true. Then there are days when every sentence feels like an uphill climb, each word a stone to lift. Yet, we return. What is it that draws us back to the blank page, again and again, despite the uncertainty, the self-doubt, the distractions that call us away?
For me, writing is a pulse, a rhythm threading through me, whispering stories that ache to be told, like the steady drumming of rain against a windowpane or the soft rustle of wind through autumn leaves. Some days it beats louder, insistent and demanding; other days, it hums low, waiting for my attention. But always, it is there, calling.
I once believed writing was an act of discipline, something to push through with sheer will. And while persistence has its place, I now see that writing, at its best, is alignment. It is not a battle; it is a surrender. The more I follow the thread of excitement, the more I trust that the words will come, and the deeper I fall in love with the process.
What keeps me writing? The thrill of discovery, the way a character steps beyond what I imagined, the way a single sentence shifts everything. Chris, my protagonist in Dear Sister, began as a quiet presence in the background until his voice became undeniable. That moment of revelation, of witnessing a story unfold beyond my own intentions, is what keeps me returning. It’s the joy of creation, bringing something into existence that wasn’t there before. It’s the silent communion between writer and reader, where words transcend the page and become something more.
And you? What keeps you writing, even on the hard days?
