Embracing Feedback: The Writer’s Journey

Handing in my writing to my editor, a beta reader, a friend, or even to my husband feels like walking into an unfamiliar forest under a turbulent sky. It’s both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Even though I’ve done this before, the unease never truly vanishes. Each time, there’s that recurring hum of fragility and expectancy, a reminder that this journey is as much about personal evolution as it is about sculpting a narrative.

Before taking that leap, I painstakingly scrutinize every sentence, reading and rereading the text. I export the draft from Scrivener, convert it into a Word document, and change the font to something entirely different, something that forces a fresh perspective. This shift in perception is transformative; it’s like placing a magnifying glass over hidden redundancies or dull comparisons, flaws previously camouflaged. Yet, for all this diligence, I know discrepancies and ambiguities still lurk, imperfections visible only to an unacquainted reader. I’ve come to accept that no degree of self-editing can fully replace the value of external perspectives.

Writing from unfiltered imagination brings unique complexities. As creators, we often assume our readers will intuitively grasp the flow of events or appreciate the nuances in our language. But what appears seamless in our thoughts can unravel on the page. These characters, these realms, have been our companions for years, maybe lifetimes. They’re as vivid as cherished friends, their idiosyncrasies and arcs etched deeply into our psyche. Converting their essence into a story comprehensible to others requires a delicate architecture we sometimes falter to construct. We carry the backstory, the driving forces, the intricate threads that make them whole. Yet distilling this wealth into a cohesive and captivating narrative for someone entirely new to their world, that’s the real artistry, a balancing act as fine as threading a needle.

This is where external feedback shines as an irreplaceable asset. It’s a beacon, a shift in dynamics, providing us with an angle we could never achieve alone. Writing might seem an isolated endeavor but refining a piece calls for partnership. Without the boldness to welcome others into our creative sanctum, our stories risk remaining incomplete, shadows of their true potential. Vulnerability becomes the cornerstone, an open mind essential for absorbing critiques that elevate our artistry. Each reader offers a distinct viewpoint, their observations often casting light on obscured facets, offering precision where the story once stumbled.

When that critique lands, the knee-jerk reaction might be to justify, to clarify. After all, these works are our offspring, tenderly nurtured with fragments of our essence. But I’ve learned to pause, to inhale deeply. I allow the feedback to percolate for a day or two, letting clarity crystallize before implementing any significant revisions. In this reflective space, I uncover fresh insights, uncovering avenues to enhance and refine. Feedback is not a critique of identity; it’s an opportunity to evolve, to perceive our creations anew, and to polish them to brilliance.

Crafting a novel, a narrative, or even a blog entry requires bravery because it involves baring a fragment of your soul. The exposure can sting, but the fulfillment is boundless. It’s the delight of watching your characters breathe their first breath in the world, their tales resonating with others. It’s in the quiet notes from readers who share how your words mirrored their experiences, made them feel acknowledged, emboldened, or profoundly moved. These connections reaffirm why I write, to bridge gaps, to explore boundless realms, and to savor the exhilaration of creation.

This is why I write. My characters are driven by an innate desire to have their stories voiced. I often ponder, what narratives simmer within others, awaiting their unveiling? What stirs your imagination? What compels your hand to sketch, to mold, to craft? Creation, in its myriad expressions, binds us to something grander, and each shared tale enriches that intricate mosaic. What story will you offer to it?
